Goreme was a peaceful place compared to Istanbul and Ankara, a quiet village, without anyone bothering us. On the second day we visited the outdoor museum, and saw numerous pigeon holes cut into the walls of the valley (for collection of guano) and massive churches and monasteries with frescoes intact. Although the inhabitants of the caves later erased from the eyes of most of the faces painted on the walls and ceilings.
Derinkuyu underground city and the valley Ilhara. The underground city was one of about 200 that were built as temporary shelters of the invaders. In Derinkuyu 2000 people could live for 2 weeks before they would have to clean the surface and waste water and a little fresh air. Cities really clean, equipped with heavy round stone door that could be rolled into place, if the invaders came to find an entry that was unlikely. In fact, the underground cities have been lost for hundreds of years after the original builders did not need them anymore. Ilhara Valley Walking was very quiet as there are olive, pistachio and poplar to shelter us from the heat, and a small stream bubbling and chilled feet on the road.
